It’s Really NOT About the Diamonds…

“Where are they?” “This is hard!” “Give us another clue!”

I love kids! The other day I led my 5 and 7 year old grand-nephews on a Diamond Dig. They like “Minecraft” video games, and saw diamonds on there, and wanted diamonds. So I bought four big glass diamonds and buried them at a park near their home.

Without asking for any hints from me, garden trowels in hand, they first ran to dig where it was easy: the sand bottomed playground. They dug here and there, some holes pretty deep.

After awhile, when they didn’t find diamonds, they became a bit more coachable. I suggested they look farther, like on the grassy areas and under trees, for earth that had been recently dug up.

After a few minutes, I hear, “Give us better clues! We looked EVERYWHERE! Even under all the trees! They aren’t here!!” They were beginning to get frustrated.

I said, “Did you look under those trees?” pointing to five trees farther away. They were learning to go farther than they first envisioned.

So they ran over there. Sure enough, pretty soon, “I FOUND A DIAMOND!!! Now where are the others???”, looking around…

One boy went back to the hole, and dug deeper. “I FOUND ANOTHER ONE!” And then two more under that!

That’s the photo, holding their treasure. Took an hour to find them! Diamonds were all they could talk about for awhile. 🙂

They value the diamonds more by the work they invested. But even more, they grew as people:

They had a dream. They asked for it. We learned about diamonds online.

They brought tools. They became coachable.

They learned to look farther and dig deeper, to work harder than they had planned to, to look deeper in the current hole before looking for a new one.

It’s really NOT about diamonds (or a Diamond Rank in network marketing). If it was, I’d just buy them and give them to the boys. Rather, it’s about the person we become in the process of earning them. And the adventure we have! The oldest boy sat me down afterward and said, “That was really fun today!”

Life knows we like learning. It holds the goal as a reason, a stage setting, for the adventure. But the real reward?  The real purpose of it all is the same as this Auntie’s.

As Jim Rohn has said, a million dollars is a good goal, but even better is the personal growth you end up with as a result. Is that why many experienced network marketers say it improved their marriage, and made them a better parent or member of their community? And a happier person, especially when they learn the joy of contribution.

I am a teacher. And a former full-time network marketer. I teach people to teach their team. Here are free tips from me: “Ignite Your Downline: What You Must Know to Get Them Successful!”

Enjoy!
